Water Woes Has Family Using Rain Water

Cambria County —

To survive, the Symosky family literally has to get water the old fashioned way.

"I go to a spring and I get four to six gallons of water and I boil it for drinking and cooking," says Florence Symosky.

That's not all; Florence said she also catches rain water for later use and buys four cases of water a week. Her family has had to do this kind of thing for the past 13 years, ever since their second well dried up.

During the winter or when they were out of water, the Carrolltown Fire Department would deliver water to the Symoskys.

Unfortunately, this ended recently because the Symoskys live in West Carroll Township. So now the family is in limbo because the township's water line doesn't extend to their house.

"I can't understand why they can't do something for us when we're still part of West Carroll Township here," says Florence.

The West Carroll Township Fire Department doesn't have a tanker truck, so they can't transport the water. The Northern Cambria Water Authority was going to extend their lines, but the West Carroll Township Water Authority wouldn't sign off on it because they are working on getting grants to extend their own lines and that could take some time.

"I can't go all winter without water... I don't know what I'm going to do, there's four of us living here and I take care of my granddaughter," says Florence.

Unfortunately, the family will have to wait for the water line extension, unless they find a tanker truck to deliver water they buy from someone else.
