West End convenience store for sale after multiple break-ins

By Maria Miller

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

The owner of a small convenience store in Johnstown said he's struggling to get by after falling victim to several break-ins over the years, most recently Friday night, when someone threw a brick and smashed his front window. With hundreds of dollars spent on maintenance and insurance, he said, he may now be forced to close.

Mitchell Solomon, owner of Shop Mart LLC, told 6 News he feels like he's been targeted.

Originally from Egypt, Mitchell Solomon made his way to the U.S. 13 years ago. He set up his business, Shop Mart LLC, along Fairfield Avenue in Johnstown's West End. But he said he quickly came to realize his business was built around empty promises.

"This area is not good here," said Solomon. "(There's) no security, the community is bad (and they) all depend on drugs around the store."

Solomon said he's seen crime first hand, most recently Friday night.

"He broke the big window and glass," said Solomon. "Plus he broke the door of the cooler (and caused) all this damage."

But this isn't the first time he's been targeted. Just a few years ago, he asid, someone broke in and stole all the tobacco products, lottery tickets and the cash register. He's since installed an alarm system but said Friday's incident is proof it doesn't help.

"The alarm goes off and he runs away," said Solomon. "So I pay insurance, I pay to fix the problems. That's not good for small business."

He said it's taken a toll, forcing him to pack up and move on.

"For a small business if everybody came and broke the door, broke a window, tried to rob me inside store, I cannot make business," said Solomon. "I cannot make any money. Now I lose money. So I put a sign for sale because I cannot continue this situation."

Anyone with information should call Johnstown police.
