Where Is Bed Tax Going?

Is it a 70 million dollar white elephant in Blair County? Commissioners are at odds over the effectiveness of the Allegheny Mountains Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

When it opened, the CVB and the Convention Center were supposed to promote tourism to Blair County through the money generated by a bed tax. But is the money being used for the common good or just the Convention Center?

It depends on who you ask. Organizations like the Altoona Railroaders Museum don't think so. Museum officials asked for some money from the bed tax to promote the museum. But months have gone by and still no meeting.

Commissioner John Eichelberger says he has had no support from the other two Commissioners and its long overdue for all three of them to sit down with the CVB board and try to change how the tax is allocated.

"65-70 events a year, most are dinners, not getting what was promised, down 600 beds than before, regional travel, numbers should be solid, no reason for this but management."

Commissioner Donna Gority has agreed maybe a meeting is best at this point but doesn't agree with Eichelberger's take on the situation.

"I don't see how we can change anything... there are laws; and that would mean the CVB would have to admit mistakes and make changes."
