The new Food Pyramid recommends even more servings of whole grains every day, and that may seem like bad news to white bread lovers. But the Good Housekeeping Institute has found some new slices that may surprise you.
Spread some PB & J on a slice of white, and a slice of whole wheat, and which one would your child choose?
White bread is a favorite, making up about 45% of total bread sales, but now manufacturers are using a special variety of white wheat along with a special milling process to make bread that they say taste like white bread but has the nutritional benefits of whole grain, says Delia Hammock, Nutrition Director, Good Housekeeping Institute.
One is Wonder White Bread Fans 100% Whole Grain which is actually 100% whole grain. And, Sara Lees Soft & Smooth Whole Grain White which uses 1/3 whole grain flour and has a little less fiber. Both breads were served on color coded plates to adults and packed in color coded, air-tight baggies for kids.
I didnt like the bread well because it tasted a little too soft, says one kid taster.
In the end, 9 out of 10 kids preferred Sara Lees, so it might serve as a step in the 100% whole grain direction. While the soft-white-bread-loving adults were more evenly divided between the two.
Both breads tasted pretty good, but I found the red bread to have a little bit of a grainy texture which I didnt like so I like the smooth fluffier bread, says one adult taster.
I love white bread so this is a very good test for me, says another adult taste tester.
Both brands of the white bread have more fiber than traditional white bread. So if someone in your house hates to eat anything grainy, you might try serving one of these breads.
