SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

Windber borough council has agreed to advance funds to neighboring Paint Township to keep its police force up and running, but it comes with strict stipulations.

At a meeting Thursday night, Windber council members voted unanimously to provide $90,000 to Paint Township, which was in danger of having to shut down its police department.

After a review, Windber council agreed that Paint Township must advance the money on a bi-weekly basis and Paint Township Police Chief Rick Skiles must manage the funds. Paint Township must also provide documentation of the process.

Skiles said, "I think that it's important to for the people to know that they're safe and that the police officers are here within moments of their calls."

Windber council is also requesting that Paint Township's current township treasurer resigns so the township has a fresh start.

Jim Furmanchik. vice president of Windber council, said, "The citizens of this community are important to us, but right now police protection is the main objective."
