Windber Railroad Crossing Getting Much-Needed Repairs

WINDBER, Pa. —

A construction project to repair a Somerset County railroad crossing was causing traffic headaches for Windber residents, but many said the project was much-needed.

People who drive over the railroad crossing at Graham Avenue and 13th Street know the bumpy ride.

Martha Matta, of Windber, said the project is "long, long overdue. They should have done this in the beginning."

Crews were working on repairing the bumps, and also worked to repair a railroad crossing light. Because of a circuit malfunction, the light hasn't worked for months, which was a big problem at a busy and dangerous intersection.

Since the Rosebud Mine reopened about 1 1/2 years ago, trains carrying loads of coal have barreled through the intersection. About eight times a week, police have had to direct traffic. Officers said the lights will be a big help to them, but in the meantime, businesses along the stretch of Graham Avenue are reminding customers that they're still open.

"There's plenty of parking off the main street. They won't have any problem getting here if they need to get here," said Andy Shima, owner of Top Hat Cleaners.

The police chief said officials will still keep a close eye on the intersection for drivers who don't pay attention to the light.

Windber Police Chief Rick Skiles said, "The short time the signals did operate, people were running the lights. …They would try to beat them and we know if we're not here and get that problem resolved quickly, someone will end up getting hurt or killed."

Skiles said the work is expected to be finished on Monday or Tuesday at the latest.
