Windber, PA —
The recent tragedy in Newtown Connecticut, officials with the Windber school district say they are taking their own security to the next level by involving Paint Township police.
" In light of some of the tragic issues throughout the country the school appears to be wanting to take this a step further to enhance the security of our staff and students," Paint Township Police Chief Rick Skiles said.
One way to do that they said could be with a student resource officer. The district hired one in 2009, but eliminated the position last year due to budget constraints.
" We always had a strong presence in the school district and we are looking to possibly take that to another step," Skiles said.
One change officials are making now is allowing police to access school security cameras.
" We are not changing our procedures, we are enhancing them," Windber School District Superintendent Rick Huffman said.
Officials warm that students and staff may not like the changes, but are necessary for the security of the school district.
