A winter storm hit west central Pennsylvania in the early morning hours Saturday. Six News reporter Bill Wadell reported the change over from rain to snow in Centre County started around 8 a.m.
Road conditions along U.S. route 322 in eastern Centre County were treated by PennDot road crews. This area is a focus of attention because of the high volume of traffic anticipated as Penn State football fans drive to Happy Valley for Saturday afternoon’s game against Illinois.
As of 9 a.m., sources in Somerset County were already reporting 4-inches of snow and said it was still snowing.
In the Johnstown area, road and rescue crews have been busy responding to power lines down and vehicle accidents.
Just a few miles outside Altoona, emergency crews have blocked-off Sugar Run Road. Officials there say it's a road notorious for getting slick when it snows. The road is shut down from bottom of the mountain-all the way to the top.
Severe Weather Team 6 meteorologist Josh Fosbrink has been tracking the storm all Saturday morning. He says the 6 News viewing area should start seeing snow clear out in the early evening hours. He says there could be up to 8-inches of snow area wide with some pockets of heavier and lighter accumulation.
Fosbrink says Sunday should be clearer with sun and temperatures in the 40’s.
