A winter storm with snow, sleet and freezing rain caused school delays, closures and slick roads in parts of the area overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

The wintry mix closed and delayed many local schools, and also caused some travel difficulties for the Wednesday morning commute.

In the Johnstown area, a combination of freezing rain and snow created a slushy mess on roads and sidewalks. Areas farther north and east saw generally all snow with a small accumulation.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews were out early treating roads. There were few accidents locally, but none were severe. Two people suffered minor injuries in a crash in Curwensville, Clearfield County, when the driver of a sport utility vehicle lost control on snow-covered Route 879 and collide with a Jeep Cherokee. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and were not badly hurt.

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are urging drivers to be cautious, reduce speeds and keep an eye out for snow removal equipment.

Severe Weather Team 6 said Thursday is expected to be a bit colder as northern air moves in behind the departing storm system. Much colder air is predicted to arrive next week.
