A winter storm warning is in effect for much of the WJAC-TV viewing area with the threat of a substantial snowfall.

The forecast has road crews across Pennsylvania on alert and they were working hard Friday for their first winter test.

Local officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said they were speaking with county managers, preparing them for the possibility of snow. PennDOT crews are pretreating some area roads, especially the interstates and highways around State College because of the upcoming Penn State - Illinois football game.

PennDOT officials said their final winter preparations are being made and they have 2,200 trucks, 5,400 operators and more than 600,000 tons of salt ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at the area.

Motorists are also reminded to prepare their vehicles for winter. At Roxbury Tire Center in Johnstown, workers said many people were coming in asking questions and wanting to get their vehicles checked before winter is in full swing. Workers said most drivers don't want to get winter tires now and usually wait until snow is on the ground, but for those looking to beat the rush, now may be a good time.
