The National Weather Service said the first day of winter on Friday might be packing a snowy punch for the mountains and higher elevations in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The Weather Service in State College has issued a winter storm watch for Somerset County from late Thursday night through Saturday evening. Snow accumulation could be between 8-12 inches and gusting winds are also possible.

The winter storm watch also includes higher elevations in neighboring Fayette and Westmoreland counties.

The Weather Service said rain is expected to change to snow late Thursday. There could be a several-hour lull in snowfall on Friday morning before snow increases Friday through Saturday.

Strong wind gusts combined with snowfall is expected to bring the potential for significant blowing and drifting snow and near-blizzard conditions. Visibility could be reduced to .5 mile or near zero during times of heavier snowfall and when snow is blowing.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
