The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for much of the region until 7 a.m. Saturday.

The advisory is in effect for counties including Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Elk, Huntingdon and Somerset.

The Weather Service said the Laurel Highlands, south central mountains and lower Susquehanna River Valley are expected to get snow or mixed precipitation changing to all snow.

Accumulations a light coating of ice is possible Friday morning followed by 1 to 3 inches of snow in the afternoon and evening. Up to 4 inches of snow is possible near and just to the north of Interstate 80. Snowfall is expected to end early Saturday.

The Weather Service said a light coating of ice on outdoor items and walkways is possible Friday morning, with snow-covered and slick roads possible Friday afternoon and evening. There may be a few periods of poor visibility, under ½ of a mile.

The NWS said a winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Drivers should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving. Motorists should be especially cautious on bridges and overpasses where slippery spots develop first.
