Witness recalls aftermath of explosion, starts collection for family

By Maria Miller

CLEARFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Kepshire Road in Clearfield Township, Cambria County, has reopened after an explosion leveled a home Tuesday morning. In the rubble sits a twisted piece of metal. It's the truck investigators said was carrying explosives that a man detonated outside the home.

Police said Bradley Kollar intended to kill the family that lived inside. Kollar died. Two members of the Shaner family were home and hurt.

The usually quiet community is still stunned but banding together to help the family, now left with nothing.

"It was almost like walking into a time warp or something," said Rose Marie Fox, who lives nearby. "When something tragic happens to someone, you don't hear much, you just go into action."

Fox said that when she heard the explosion Tuesday morning, she rushed over to see what was going on. The destruction and injuries are sights she couldn't believe. But when she saw Ryan Shaner needed help, she rushed to his side.

"I wanted to help him, but I didn't know how to get to him, because the fear in his face and the debris to get to him was pretty tough," said Fox.

But she wasn't only one of the first on the scene, she was also the one who had the difficult task of calling Linda Shaner and breaking the horrible news.

"I basically told her there was an explosion and her family needed her," said Fox. "(I told her) Ryan was going to be OK, but he needed his mom."

After seeing the devastation firsthand, Fox said she knew she had to do something.

"I haven't slept much since then, but in that, I'm turning that into a positive," she said.

Fox owns Fox's Hairazr salon in Patton, and that's where she's taking up a collection for the Shaner family.

"They need everything, from the littlest thing to the biggest thing your home would have," said Fox. "They'll be OK, but they do need a little help, and I'm here to do my part."

Donations can be dropped off at the salon any day of the week. It's at 711 Fifth Ave. in Patton, Pa.
