Witnesses describe aftermath of police chase, crash

By Jen Johnson and  WJAC Web Staff

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

A man is in custody after he allegedly crashed into a police cruiser while driving a stolen car in Johnstown.

Police said the suspect, Kevin Plummer, was driving a car reported stolen from Richland Township.

A pursuit started when a Dale Borough police officer spotted the stolen car and tried to pull the driver over. That's when things escalated as the driver led police on a chase through the city of Johnstown.

Police ultimately arrested the man behind the wheel, but not before he crashed into a police cruiser and hurt two officers. Both officers were checked into a hospital but have since been released with minor injuries.

It's a story that could have ended differently though.

"I heard the crash and I come out of my front door and I seen the cops pulling the guy out of the car," said Darrel Keith, who lives near the crash scene. "(They were) wrestlin' him to the ground, cuffin' him and stuffin' him."

Police said Kevin Plummer stole a  Grand Am, with the keys still inside, from the parking lot of Pizza Hut in Richland Township Thursday morning.

"I thought maybe that car ended up in Rick's living room when I heard it," said Keith.

6 News caught up with Rich Burggraf about an hour after the accident. He lives just feet away from where the Grand Am came to a halt.

"I was sitting in the living room and I heard sirens going up and down the road, and I looked out the window and I just opened the door and that's when I seen this car plow into the sidewalk," said Burggraf. "(I was) scared. I have a dad in there who's on oxygen, I've been taking care of him. I'm still a little bit shaken over it."

Even after the busted-up patrol car and stolen Grand Am were towed away, the people who live nearby have a story to tell and they told 6 News they hope at least one person is listening.

"God better be with you (Plummer) buddy," said Burggraf. "You're gonna need a lot of prayers on this one."

Kevin Plummer is behind bars in the Cambria County Jail.
