WJAC-TV Gets Exclusive Look At Flight 93 Memorial

While a lot has changed since the last time WJAC-TV was allowed down to the Flight 93 Memorial, the same eerie feeling and strong emotions that hit when you arrive remain a constant.

An open field with a single sandstone boulder, with a grove of hemlock trees behind, mark the impact site of Flight 93 in Shanksville. It's an area peacefully preserved.

Without the large black walls and walkways, it would be almost impossible to tell it's the final resting place of the 40 heroes who met their fate on a hijacked plane almost ten years ago.

The temporary memorial is currently located almost a quarter mile away. The length of the new memorial will be as close to the crash site as you can get.

The length of the memorial is 1,200 feet from the gateway to a wall filled with the names of the passengers and crew members of Flight 93. Its a place where people from all over the world will be able to visit, to reflect, pay their respects, and begin their own individual healing process.

Hundreds if not thousands of people are expected to attend the official unveiling of the memorial on Sept. 10. If you plan on attending there are some things you should be aware of.

First you'll drive two and a half miles off Route 30 to a temporary parking area about half a mile away from the crash site. From there you'll be required to board a bus that will shuttle you to the memorial.

Organizers tell WJAC-TV that the entire field behind the memorial will be open and they plan on filling it with as many people as they can. Big screen televisions will also be set up to broadcast the event for those in the back of the field. You are allowed to bring lawn chairs as long as they are not enclosed in a bag.

With Vice President Joe Biden scheduled to be in attendance on Saturday and President Obama to arrive on Sunday, security for the entire weekend is going to be tight. But organizers still encourage people to attend.
