Woman Falls through Ice, Passerby Calls 911

By Stef Davis

TYRONE, Pa

Chris Romano of Tyrone kicked off the New Year with quite a scare.

Chris Romano, Tyrone, says, "My heart dropped. I felt helpless. I knew if I walked out there on the ice I was going to fall in."

Chris was passing by along the Tyrone reservoir Tuesday when he saw a sight he says was straight out of a movie. A woman chasing her dog out onto the ice and within seconds crashing through to the bone-chilling waters below.

Romano adds, "She pulled up and she went in. At this point I’m panicking. I walked out onto the ice and it started to crack. I knew I would fall in. All i knew to do was call 911.”

For the next ten minutes, as the woman remain trapped neck-deep, Chris did what he could to help her. Pulling down tree branches to extend to her, yelling for help until firefighters arrived.

David Lynch, Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder, says, "We tried different methods of rescue. We threw a throw bag to her. We ended up having a firefighter walked out onto the ice and got her and walked her back to the shore. We got her out of the water, put her in the ambulance and AMED took over from there."

Firefighters say if the woman remained in the water any longer, hypothermia would've kicked in, putting her life in serious danger. They are thankful that Chris was willing to do what he could to help save the life of a complete stranger.

Romano says, "I would've done that for anyone, because I would hope that someone would do the same for me."
