Woman killed after severed deer flies through windshield in freak accident

By Bill Wadell

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. —

Troopers said charges will not be filed after a bizarre accident early Tuesday morning that claimed the life of a Jefferson County woman.

Authorities told 6News that a vehicle, driven by Scott Egolf of Punxsutawney, hit a deer on Route 830 in Washington Township and sent the whitetail airborne.

The deer smashed through the windshield of a sedan driving on Route 830 in the opposite direction, driving toward Falls Creek.

State police said the deer was severed in half by the windshield and hit the driver, 70-year-old Rosemary Bower or Brookville.

Bower’s Ford Focus continued traveling on a straightaway for about four-tenths of a mile before slamming into the back of a pickup truck.

The Jefferson County coroner told 6News that Bower was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and was killed by blunt force trauma from the deer and resulting crash.

Troopers said Egolf turned around after the crash but was unable to locate the car that was hit by the deer, which continued traveling off the road and into a ditch.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s office said that no charges will be filed against Egolf after the accident.
