Women's Help Center Concerned About Deputy Sheriff Layoff

The elimination of a deputy sheriff position is causing some concern for one women's domestic abuse shelter.

Deputy sheriffs process protection-from-abuse notices. PFAs are crucial to the safety of domestic abuse victims.

Usually victims can get a PFA in just one day. The shelter hopes this will continue to happen after the elimination of the position.

County Sheriff Bob Kolar said the deputies filed close to 200 PFAs this year.

WJAC-TV spoke with county commissioner PJ Stevens about the layoff. He said technology will ease the deputy sheriff's work load. The courts can now use telecommunication for hearings. Stevens also said reorganizing the sheriff's schedule will also help. This will allow them to do all of their work, including processing PFAs.
