Women's Help Center Keeping Close Eye On Budget Talks

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

Despite some progress being made in Harrisburg, a final budget plan could still be a long way off. The effects of the crisis are being felt by many.

The Women's Help Center in Johnstown is a service that victims of domestic abuse rely on to keep them safe as they get back on their feet. Officials at the center said they are facing some significant cuts from the budget crisis and it could end up taking its toll on services.

Officials said they have already been notified that their state funding will be cut by $84,000. That's before the finalized budget, which means more cuts could lie ahead.

According to officials at the center, they may end up having to cut five staff positions, and they are trying hard not to let the situation affect the services they offer victims of abuse.

Officials said they can go maybe another two or three months before the women-in-need feel the pain from the budget impasse.

"We're going to stay open as long as we have funds," said the center coordinator Joseph Bunk. "We don't know how long they will last, but we are going to try to provide the necessary services to those in danger."

Bunk said 75 percent of their funding comes from the state. The rest comes from fundraisers and donations. He claims any cuts in service could endanger peoples' lives.
