Work Continues To Improve Popular Cambria County Trail

Work continues to improve safety along a popular biking and hiking trail in suburban Johnstown.

Last summer, a park ranger said the trail through Stackhouse Park was an accident waiting to happen. A fence no surrounds an abandoned mine shaft. For months, crews have been venting methane gas from the 300-foot hole.

"It's just a precaution to make sure that we don't have any methane episodes," said Park Ranger Jim Pasco.

The second phase of improvements is expected to get under way in the fall. Officials said part of the Elk Run Trail may have to be closed while crews fill the mine shaft.
