SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

A project that many people in Somerset County thought would never happen is officially under way.

Work on expanding Route 219 to a four-lane highway from Somerset to Meyersdale started Friday morning with crews cutting down trees along the route.

Two tree service companies will eliminate 250 acres of trees, and that work is expected to be complete by the end of March.

The $300 million expansion of an 11-mile stretch of highway will start this summer.

The expansion project is expected to take five years to complete.
