Young Student Wanders Away From School

Cambria County —

The 6-year-old got out of East Side Elementary School and started walking. The big question is how? Her family, the school, and the Johnstown Police are all looking into this.

The girl's mother, Delores Rodriguez, tells Channel 6 News she took her daughter to school late. An hour later the girl's Grandmother calls Delores saying her daughter is at her house. The little girl claims she couldn't get into her classroom at school and a secretary at the front desk opened the front doors and let her leave. The girl walked from Hornerstown to her Grandmother's in Kernville across busy streets and the Stoneycreek River, for a couple of miles. Her Mother is furious with East Side Elementary.

She tells Channel 6 News, "She could've ended up dead or somebody could've put her in their car. Ya' know, anything could've happened to her and then I would've been the one suffering because of their stupidity."

Johnstown School District officials and Johnstown Police are investigating this. The school district has not returned calls from Channel 6 News. Johnstown Police say officers will talk to school staff. Right now, police say there is no evidence a staff member let the little girl out of school. Channel 6 News continues to follow this developing story.
