Army Says Spikes Players Must Leave Team (7/26)

STATE COLLEGE, PA —

Two players with the State College Spikes will soon be leaving their baseball careers behind to report for military duty.

West Point graduates Cole White and Chris Simmons received their orders to depart for service in the Army.

The Army previously had a policy that allows soldiers to play professional sports, but the military branch has since changed that policy.

White leaves State College as the team's best hitter. The left fielder led the Spikes with a .366 batting average. Going into Friday night's game, he was in the midst of a 17-game hitting streak, just one game away from tying the franchise record. Simmons was batting .258 with four RBI in 31 games.

State College's 4-3 win over Batavia on Friday night was the final game for White and Simmons, who say they will reside in West Point for the next five-to-six months.
