Bires wins Jennerstown ASA Challenge Series 200

JENNERSTOWN, PA (July 29) … Wisconsin driver Kelly Bires proved to be the dominant force Saturday evening at Jennerstown Speedway, as he ran away and hid from the ASA Late Model Series field in the Automotive Resources AC Delco Challenge 200 at the half-mile paved Somerset County oval.

Bires broke out of a tight five-car battle for the lead on Lap-62 to take the front spot from Jack Smith with an outside pass going down the back stretch. From this point Bires never looked back has he built his lead to over a full straight at one point and lapped up to the seventh place finisher.

“We had a great race car tonight,” said Bires. “The car was real loose for the first 30-laps or so, but then got better towards the end of the first hundred. We put two new rights on and added fuel for the second segment. New tires usually free the car up, but our car got really tight during the last 50-laps.

“We’re leading the ASA national points right now,” he said, “ but our team concentrates more on winning races. Our focus is on the next race.”

Smith hung on for second place, and was actually closing the gap a bit at the end. “Our car was good,” Smith said. “Lapped traffic screwed us up… I was hoping to get a shot at Kelly at the end. I think we may have had something for him on a short run.”

Brent Downey was third, trailed by Peter Cozzolino, Landon Cassill, Charlie Menard, Travis Dassow, Eddie Hoffman, Jesse Smith and Jeff VanOudenhoven.

Former track champion Garry Wiltrout finished 15th, while two-time 2006 feature winner Kyle Martel was 16th. Former Jennerstown campaigner Rick Miller led the first 35 laps of the contest, but was later involved in a spin, and dropped out with mechanical problems to finish 18th.

Chad Wood was the fastest in time trials, stopping the clock with a time of 18.622.

In NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action rookie Mark Rend captured his first WJAC-TV late model event by leading all 25 laps, and withstanding a strong challenge from current point leader Dusty Rhoads. Mel Wilt was third, ahead of Chris Brink and Wade Champeno.

Adam Kostelnik continued his winning streak in the Advance Auto Parts street stocks, winning his seventh consecutive 20 lapper over Steve Singo, Bill Ashton, Phil Grubbs and Scott Bowman.

Eugene Zerfoss returned to Victory Lane in the 15-lap hobby stock finale, outdistancing Scott McCall, John Steeley, Teddy Gibala, and Doug Long.
