Bucs Avoid Sweep In Montreal

(Montreal-AP) -- Pittsburgh broke a 3-all tie with three unearned runs in the top of the ninth and then held off Montreal 6-to-5.

A throwing error by losing pitcher Joey Eischen opened the door for the Bucs. Pinch-hitter Kenny Lofton drove in the Pirates' go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to deep center. Jason Kendall and Jeff Reboulet then added run-scoring singles.

Reboulet and Reggie Sanders earlier had homered for the Pirates.

Ron Calloway had a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for Montreal and Brian Schneider then doubled, but the Expos left the potential tying run stranded at third.

Scott Sauerback worked two innings of relief to get the win, and Mike Williams got his 20th save.
