Bucs Shutout In Montreal

(Montreal-AP) -- Claudio Vargas fired a three-hitter over eight innings to lead Montreal's 3-to-0 shutout of Pittsburgh. Vargas allowed just one extra-base hit while improving to 4-and-3 in eleven starts since being recalled from the minors in April. He matched his longest outing of the year before Rocky Biddle pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Edwards Guzman smacked his first homer in nearly two years, a solo shot that made it 2-to-0 in the third. Brian Schneider had an R-B-I double and Jose Vidro added a run-scoring single as the Expos won for only the third time in eleven games.

The loss goes to 5-and-7 Jeff Suppan, who was reached for three runs and eight hits in seven innings.
