UNIVERSITY PARK —
Joe Paterno said he was "scared to death" when senior cornerback D'Anton Lynn lay motionless on the Beaver Stadium grass Saturday.
Tuesday, at his weekly press conference, Paterno admitted Lynn's condition, after undergoing tests on his neck and spinal column over the weekend, is not as severe as originally feared. Paterno went so far as to say Lynn could "start working out" as early as Thursday.
While there is a chance Lynn could return this season, the same cannot be said for linebacker Michael Mauti, who tore the ACL in his left knee in Saturday's 34-6 win over Eastern Michigan. Paterno said Mauti will undergo surgery later this week and will miss the remainder of the season.
Both Mauti and Lynn were at practice on Monday.
"They're still in our ears every play making sure things are going good," said safety Malcolm Willis.
In regards to other injuries on the Penn State roster, Paterno said running back Brandon Beachum will not play in Saturday's Big Ten opener at Indiana, but offensive tackle Mike Farrell could play this weekend.
Penn State has never lost to Indiana in its program's history. The Nittany Lions are 14-0 all-time against the Hoosiers. Paterno said both quarterbacks Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden will play Saturday. McGloin has outperformed Bolden statistically this season, completing 34 of 54 passes for 421 yards and 3 touchdowns. Bolden is 33 of 71 passing, 388 yards, one touchdown, but three interceptions.
"There's no difference, really," Paterno said in regards to the competition between his two quarterbacks. He did not say if he would alter the rotation he has used for the first four games, which involves Rob Bolden starting.
"We might have a tendency towards starting that guy until we get a feel for what's going on before we make the substitution."
