UPJ's Pecora Coaches 500th Career Win

Sixth coach in NCAA wrestling to reach mark

By Matt Maisel

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. —

University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown head wrestling coach Pat Pecora became the first coach in NCAA Division II to win 500 career matches, accomplishing the feat as his Mountain Cats  defeated Shippensburg University 39-3.

Pecora, NCAA Division II's all-time winningest coach, who took over the UPJ wrestling program in 1976, becomes the sixth coach in all NCAA wrestling classes to reach the milestone.

Tuesday's landmark victory came easy for the Mountain Cats (12-3, ranked #8 in the nation), who used three major decisions and two falls to defeat the Raiders. UPJ won the first five bouts to jump out to an 18-0 lead.

Reaching the 500-win plateau is the latest in a laundry-list of accomplishments for Pecora. Along with his two national championships in 1996 and 1999, his UPJ teams have won 20 regional championships, and Pecora has been named regional coach of the year 14 times.

Pecora and Pitt-Johnstown willl shift their focus to the regional championships, an event which UPJ hasn't won since 2007. They will take place at UNC-Pembroke from February 24-25.
