Generals Still Under UIFL Suspension

By Matt Maisel

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

The Johnstown Generals indoor football team is still under suspension by the Ultimate Indoor Football League as of Friday night, according to league president Andrew Haines.

Haines spoke to 6 Sports on Friday and said the Generals, who were placed on league suspension on Monday, May 14, will not be taken off suspension until team owner Jeff Bollinger agrees to parameters on how to eliminate the team's financial issues.

"I expect him to meet these parameters," Haines said of Bollinger, adding the suspension could be lifted as early as Monday.

Bollinger did not return phone messages left by 6 Sports on Friday.

Bollinger told the Tribune-Democrat on Thursday his team had its suspension lifted, a claim which league president Haines refuted on Friday.

Haines made the suspension earlier in the week following the Generals second cancelled game in as many weeks and a lack of communication between Bollinger and the league president. Haines told 6 Sports he and Bollinger only spoke three times in approximately a two-and-a-half week stretch spanning a few days before the cancelled May 5 game and two days following the cancelled May 12 game. Bollinger says he tried calling Haines numerous times, only to have his calls unreturned.

The uncertainty of the past week hasn't prevented the Generals from moving on with or without the UIFL. Bollinger hired local football product Mike Marshall as the team's new head coach.

Marshall, a graduate of Bedford High School, was a standout at IUP, and played for all four Johnstown indoor football franchises.

Should the suspension be lifted early next week, the Generals could play as early as next Saturday against the Western PA Sting, another team owned by Jeff Bollinger.

If not, Bollinger has already contacted other indoor football leagues about playing the Generals at the Cambria County War Memorial.

"I am confident there will be football this season," Bollinger said. "One way or another."
