Shanksville's Stockenus joins elite 2,000 point club

By Matt Maisel

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. —

Kayla Stockenus said she started thinking about breaking the school record for career points when she was a freshman at Shanksville-Stonycreek High School. She never considered how historic her four-year career would become.

Stockenus scored her 2,000th career point Tuesday in a 69-37 loss to Windber. She ended the game with 27 points. The Shanksville senior needed 20 going into the game, and scored the milestone-making basket after grabbing a rebound, racing into the open court, broke through a pair of Windber defenders and laid in a basket while getting fouled. She becomes just the second girls player in Somerset County history to surpass the 2,000-point milestone.

“When I got that rebound and saw the open court I thought, ‘This is my chance. I don’t want to screw this up,’ " Stockenus said after the game. "Everyone started cheering and I was like, ‘All right, now I really have to do it.’ "

Stockenus joins Meyersdale graduate Jen Tuscano as the only players from Somerset County in the 2,000-point club. Tuscano scored 2,236 points from 1991-95.

Stockenus broke Jill Stutzman's school record of 1,783 points on Jan. 14 against Shade. In the seven games since then, Stockenus averaged approximately 32 points per game to pass the 2,000-point barrier.

"I knew I had a shot at breaking the school record this season," Stockenus added, "but 2,000 wasn't even in my mind."
