Tomahawks earn first win in shootout

By Matt Maisel

BLAINE, Minn. —

Cody Gylling scored the winning goal in a shootout while goaltender Chris Truehl was perfect in the extra frame, as the Johnstown Tomahawks picked up the first win of their inaugural season, 6-5 over Kenai River (Alaska) Thursday at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.

The win comes as the Tomahawks had struggled to find the win column, starting the season with three straight losses before Thursday's historic win.

Gylling's goal was the only one of the shootout, which may have been surprising considering the fireworks to end regulation. Johnstown trailed in the second period 4-2 when the Tomahawks scored twice in under three minutes to tie the game. J.B. Baker and Cody Smith-Mass each delivered their first goals of the season to knot the score at 4-4.

Richland Twp. native Cody Boyd scored in the third period to give Johnstown a 5-4 lead, but Kenai River scored to tie it at 5-5 and send the game into overtime.

Johnstown killed four of five penalties on the night, including one in the final minute of regulation.

The Tomahawks will face the Austin (Minn.) Bruins Friday at 8:45 ET. They will conclude play at the NAHL Showcase on Saturday against Corpus Christi (Tex.)
