Tomahawks to play Penguins in charity exhibition

Game at the War Memorial on Wednesday, January 9

By Matt Maisel

The Johnstown Tomahawks will play members of the Pittsburgh Penguins in a charity hockey exhibition, 6Sports has learned.

The game, called the Johnstown Tomahawks Charity Classic, will take place at the Cambria County War Memorial on Wednesday, January 9 at 7 p.m. According to Tomahawks President Rick Bouchard, this game has no bearing to the future of the NHL season, currently in a player lockout.

Members of the Penguins expected to play include Matt Cooke, Pascal Dupuis, Brooks Orpik, Derek Engelland, Joe Vitale, Ben Lovejoy, Chris Kunitz, Craig Adams, Marc-Andre Fleury and Jordan Staal, who was traded to Carolina in the offseason. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has not yet committed to playing, according to Bouchard.

Tickets go on sale at the Cambria County War Memorial at 10 a.m. Friday for $25 per ticket.

Most proceeds from the contest will go towards the Pittsburgh Kids Foundation-Haiti, a charity designed to improve the lives of orphans in Haiti.

Bouchard told 6Sports he had been working on this game for about "a month to 6 weeks," and said he, Dr. Brad Henderson of the Pittsburgh Kids Foundation-Haiti, and Penguins forward Matt Cooke were most instrumental in organizing this game. Bouchard said the Penguins players participating are not getting paid for the event. "This is 100% charity," he said. Penguins owner Mario Lemieux, a Tomahawks minority owner, had no involvement in the organization in this game due to the NHL Lockout, which prohibits player-owner interaction.

"We want to grow hockey in Johnstown," said Bouchard, who helped bring the Tomahawks to Johnstown from Alaska over the summer. "This gives young guys and girls in the area a chance to see a pro hockey team they may not normally get a chance to see."

The game will feature the Penguins players mixed in on teams with the Tomahawks players. It will also be officiated by three NHL referees: Steve Walton, Paul Devorski, and linesman Derek Amell.
