Martella's, Altoona eliminated; Thursday AAABA schedule released

Johnstown title drought now at 68 years

By Matt Maisel

JOHNSTOWN —

For the 68th year of the AAABA tournament, the champion will not come from Johnstown.

Martella's Pharmacy lost 4-2 to defending champion Baltimore on Wednesday, eliminating the last Johnstown team from the tournament.

No team from Johnstown has ever won a AAABA championship.

Martella's Pharmacy was the lone local team remaining in the tournament as of Wednesday night. Berkley Hills Renegades was eliminated on Tuesday and the Nittany Oil/Minit Mart franchise from Altoona was taken out Wednesday afternoon.

Baltimore, which has won the tournament a record 28 times, trailed 1-0 to Martella's until the 6th inning when Youse's Orioles scored 3 runs. They added another one in the 7th inning on a Dominic Fratantuono RBI single. Martella's threatened in the bottom of the 9th inning, sending the winning run to the plate, but Dan Abbenante lined out to the shortstop to end the game.
