Penn State football coach Joe Paterno underwent successful hip replacement surgery Sunday.

The surgery was just 24 hours after the Nittany Lions clinched the Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl in January.

University officials said the 81-year-old coach is resting comfortably at Mount Nittany Medical Center and is eager to get home.

Paterno is expected back on his feet this week and resume coaching by Dec. 1 when players come back to school after Thanksgiving break.
