Penn State Loses Mauti, Lynn In Win

UNIVERSITY PARK —

Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden combined for 335 yards passing and four touchdowns and Penn State broke out of its early-season offensive funk in a 34-6 win over Eastern Michigan.

Penn State's defense held the visiting Eagles to no touchdowns, the first time this season the Nittany Lions did not allow their opponent in the end zone, but the good news ended there for the Nittany Lions.

Linebacker Michael Mauti and cornerback D'Anton Lynn each left the game after suffering injuries. Mauti, the team's leading tackler, limped into the team's locker room in the first quarter with an ice pack around his knee.

After the game, Penn State head coach Joe Paterno said Mauti had suffered an ACL injury and is likely done for the season.

D'Anton Lynn was involved in a tackle towards the end of the third quarter. After initially trying to get up, Lynn laid motionless, face-down on the field. He was taken off the field in a stretcher and left Beaver Stadium in an ambulance.

Later Saturday evening, Penn State football sports information director Jeff Nelson confirmed Lynn was released from Mount Nittany Medical Center after undergoing tests to his neck and spinal column.

"I feel sorry for the kids," Paterno said. "It does take a little out of the win, but that's the way it goes."

Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley was asked if Lynn's injury reminded him of former Nittany Lions defensive back Adam Taliaferro, who suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury during the 2000 season.

"Absolutely," Bradley told WJAC reporter Matt Maisel. "Anytime that board comes out. It brings back a lot of bad memories."

Safety Drew Astorino added, "Football aside, you just feel bad for Mauti and D'Anton because injuries suck, and that's the bottom line."

The injuries turned Penn State's best performance of the season into a bittersweet win. McGloin went 14 of 17 for 220 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were caught by Derek Moye.

Moye finished with 65 yards, moving him past the 2,000 career receiving yards milestone and into third all-time on Penn State's all-time list.

Devon Smith made 3 catches for 103 yards, including a 71 yard touchdown on the third play of the third quarter. Smith took a screen pass from Bolden up the Penn State sideline for the score.
