Pirates Promote Former No. 1 Draft Pick To Class AA

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Jon VanBenschoten, their first round pick in 2001, from Class A Lynchburg to Class AA Altoona on Friday.

Drafted eighth overall in 2001, the Pirates have converted the former slugging first baseman into a pitcher.

This season with Lynchburg, the 6-foot-4 right-hander posted a 6-0 record with a 2.22 ERA in nine starts with 49 strikeouts. Last season with Class A Hickory in the South Atlantic League, VanBenschoten went 11-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 27 starts.

He is expected to start Monday against the Binghamton Mets.

VanBenschoten was named the the Mid-American Conference's Player of the Year in his last season at Kent State. He hit .443 with 30 homers, 79 RBIs and 22 stolen bases, and went 2-2 as a pitcher with a 2.77 ERA.
