Wings Take Game One Against Penguins

DETROIT, Mi. —

The Red Wings picked up where they left off against Pittsburgh.

Detroit received goals from three different players in all three periods to defeat the Penguins 3-1 in game one of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Brad Stuart scored first for the Red Wings, when his first period shot deflected off the boards behind Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fluery, then bounced off the netminder and into the net.

Pittsburgh responded with 90 seconds remaining in the period. Evgeni Malkin's slapshot was saved by Detroit goalie Chris Osgood, but Ruslan Fedetenko scored when Osgood allowed a rebound.

The Penguins had a chance to take the lead multiple times in the second period, including in the first five minutes. Malkin had a breakaway attempt on Osgood, but the Red Wings veteran made a save with his glove hand to keep the game tied at one. Johan Franzen gave Detroit the lead for good with under a minute to go in the frame when his shot -- much like Detroit's first goal -- caromed in off Fluery.

Justin Abdelkater gave the Red Wings an insurance third goal less than three minutes into the third period. It was his first career NHL goal.

Game 2 will be played Sunday night in Detroit at 8 p.m. It is the first time since 1955 the Stanley Cup Finals will feature games on consecutive nights.
