Emergency Officials Monitoring Flooding Potential

Related

The start of the workweek marked a wild weather day across the Alleghenies. Monday, different parts of the WJAC-TV viewing area have had severe thunderstorm warnings, flood warnings, flash flood watches and even a tornado watch at one point.

Heavy rain prompted emergency officials from across the region to keep an eye on streams and rivers, but there had been reports of any major flooding as of noon.

Emergency officials in Blair County said they are keeping an eye on pretty much all rivers, creeks and streams because most of the waterways there were getting dangerously close to the banks, like the Juniata River in Hollidaysburg, where water was just feet from a road.

In Blair County, the rain had stopped by noon and some rivers already crested. But officials there said if rain starts up again, there could be trouble. Already, a stream behind the Logan Valley Mall was high and water was making its way up the bank.

Another problem to look out for is flooded roads because many storm drains are getting clogged with debris and the water can't drain. Officials in Bedford County said West Pitt Street - a pretty heavily traveled road -- was flooded near the Interstate 99 interchange in Bedford Borough.

In Cambria County, Route 4008 in Elder Township near Hastings was closed due to high water. The road, also called Beech Road, is closed between Maines Road to the intersection with Sunset Road. Pennsylvania Department Of Transportation officials advised drivers to find and alternate route.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, the following roads were closed in Indiana County:

-SR 1014, Pine Flats Road, is closed in both directions in Green Township from Cookport Road to Hill Road due to flooding. The road is expected to reopen Tuesday by 10 a.m.

-SR 2013, Grange Hall Road, is closed in both directions from River Road in East Wheatfield Township to Kunkleman Road in Buffington Township. The road is expected to reopen Tuesday by 10 a.m.

SR 2013, Grange Hall Road, is closed in both directions near Armaugh from SR 403 to Philadelphia Street in Armaugh. The road is expected to reopen Tuesday at 10 a.m.

-SR 580 is closed in both directions in Cherry Tree Borough. The road is expected to reopen Tuesday by 10 a.m. A detour is in place using Pioneer Lake to SR 240 to Cherry Tree Road.

-SR 1022, Sebring Road, is closed in both directions from Purchase Line Road in Green Township to East Run Road in Grant Township due to flooding. The road is expected to reopen Tuesday by 10 a.m. The detour uses Purchase Line Road to SR 286.

PennDOT officials also reminded motorists to use caution and not to drive through standing water on roadways. Due to the heavy rains, ponding water is possible.
