High Winds Down Trees, Cause Power Outages

As a result of high winds, trees were downed and many residents were left without power Wednesday.

Winds hit nearly 50 miles per hour at the University Park Airport in Centre County. In Cresson Township, where there was a high crosswinds warning, the highest gusts were measured at 55 to 60 miles per hour.

In Cambria County, a tree was downed in Upper Yoder Township and winds that hit the Greater Johnstown area and nearby Richland brought down tree limbs all morning.

In Centre County, Centre Hall Elementary School was without power, prompting the school to dismiss before 9 a.m.

Other residents across the Alleghenies were also without electricity, including 50 customers in the Curwensville area, 70 in Philipsburg, 350 in the Madera area and about 450 in Punxsutawney.

The high winds were expected to continue throughout the day, with gusts possibly reaching 60 miles per hour.
