Officials said they are also concerned about high winds causing power outages.

Thursday night into Friday, Penelec reported as many as 2,000 customers without electricity, mainly in Somerset County. By 5 a.m., the number had been reduced to more than 400, and later in the morning Penelec officials said all of their customers were back on-line.

People who see downed power lines should stay away from the area and call Penelec at 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877)

Penelec officials said they are prepared to avoid widespread outages. While areas like Pittsburgh had power outages when snow fell heavily, that has not been the case so far this winter in the Alleghenies. Penelec crews said throughout the year, they have a tree-trimming program that cuts down limbs that are closed to power lines that could cause outages.

As of 10 a.m., Allegheny Power reported 18 power outages in Bedford County and one each in Elk and Centre counties.

In Cambria County, the Emergency Management Agency is prepared to open an emergency shelter if there are many power outages.
