Residents Cleaning Up After Weekend Storm

More snow over the weekend meant more problems for homes and businesses throughout the Alleghenies.

Workers with Mihalko's General Contracting said the latest snowfall had crews hard at work. Last week, it took crews four days to dig out one business.

"It was 15-foot high drifts, 100-feet long and it took a lot of guys. And it didn't take much for it to come right back," said Lou Mihalko.

The difference with the latest snowfall was the wind, which created a lopsided effect on many roofs that the structures are not equipped to handle.

"One side can be completely clear; the other side can be as much as 6 or 8 feet (of snow) on the side of the roof. What happens is it creates too much weight on one side and creates cave-ins and sagging roofs," Mihalko said.

He said people should shovel snow off roofs as soon as possible. With warmer weather in the forecast for this weekend, people whose basements flooded before may have the same problem again and he urged people to also prepare for that.

"Raise your things up, put them on pallets, put them in a second floor to protect what you have, because unless you have flood insurance specifically, you're not going to be covered by this," Mihalko said.
