Snow Hits Some Places Hard, Others Hardly At All

Though snow before Halloween isn't unprecedented, the hit-or-miss wintry weather that swept across the region left some areas covered and others hardly touched.

In the Ridgway area of Elk County, lake effect snow bands dumped between 8 inches and a foot of snow in some places, rivaling major winter snowfalls.

St. Mary's School District canceled classes on Wednesday and other schools in the region delayed school.

In contrast, just a few snowflakes were spotted in Blair County and there was no accumulation. There was no snow on the ground in Altoona and the surrounding area and no travel problems to speak of.

In between those two extremes was the snow situation in Cambria County, where several crashes were blamed on inclement weather.

Wednesday morning, a truck carrying hazardous materials spilled its load on Route 36 in Gallitzin. As of noon, hazmat workers were at the scene cleaning up and the intersection of Forest Road up to Mark Hanna Road in Dean Township was closed.

The high price of salt had many boroughs limiting their use of it to clear roads and they instead used a mixture of anti-skid and salt.
