Griese Questionable; Garcia Could Start

Monday, October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Brian Griese is considered questionable for this week's game against Carolina after sustaining elbow and shoulder injuries Sunday against Denver.

Bucs coach Jon Gruden said he would address whether Griese or Jeff Garcia gets the nod under center later this week. Garcia, the Week 1 starter, took over for Griese in Sunday's 16-13 setback.

"Obviously, health is going to be an issue," Gruden said Monday. "We'll evaluate [Griese] today and let you know on Wednesday."

Griese was driven into the ground by a Broncos defender late in the third quarter. He went to the sideline to be evaluated while favoring his shoulder and did not return. The Michigan product had won all three of his starts prior to Sunday's game.

Garcia, who hadn't played since the season-opener against New Orleans, threw for 93 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 13-of-17 passing Sunday, as Tampa Bay's comeback effort fell just short.

"I thought he went in there late in the game yesterday and moved around, made some creative plays that we're accustomed to seeing," noted Gruden.

Garcia threw for 221 yards with a touchdown and an interception, connecting on 24-of-41 throws in the season-opening loss to New Orleans. He also sustained an ankle injury against the Saints and watched Griese lead the Bucs to a Week 2 win over Atlanta.

Gruden then gave Griese the starting nod the following week against Chicago. Garcia, who led the Bucs to the playoffs last year, did not see the field again until Sunday.

"We feel like we have two veteran quarterbacks now that have played," Gruden added. "Both guys can win for us. We will make that decision on Wednesday when we get all the facts. Right now we are concerned about Griese's arm and we are encouraged by Jeff Garcia's progress."

Griese completed 13-of-19 passes for 88 yards and was sacked three times before leaving Sunday's game.
