Giants Suspend Plaxico Burress

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

(Sports Network) - The New York Giants have suspended wide receiver Plaxico Burress one game for violating team rules.

Details were not provided by Giants head coach Tom Coughlin and general manager Jerry Reese, who made the announcement on Wednesday morning after meeting with Burress and informing him of the suspension that takes effect immediately.

"Nobody wanted this to happen," said Coughlin, who would not elaborate further.

The Giants disciplined Burress after the wide receiver missed a practice and refused to explain his absence. Burress' agent Drew Rosenhaus said his client had a family matter to attend to and that plans are in place to appeal the suspension through the NFL Players' Association.

The 3-0 Giants have a bye this week and will host Seattle on October 5, meaning the suspension is actually for two weeks.

Burress, who agreed to a contract extension through the 2012 campaign just hours before the start of the season on September 4, will be eligible to rejoin the team on Monday, October 6. The suspension means Burress will miss a pair of paychecks totaling over $235,000.

In three games this season, Burress leads the Giants with 18 receptions for 259 yards with one touchdown.

Last season, he led the club with 70 receptions for 1,025 yards and a career- high 12 touchdowns. Burress added 18 receptions for 221 yards in the playoffs, including the game-winning 13-yard TD in Super Bowl XLII.
