Steelers Release Najeh Davenport

Saturday, June 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers released running back Najeh Davenport Saturday.

Davenport rushed for 499 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games last season, but was deemed expendable after the Steelers inked free agent running back Mewelde Moore and used their first pick in this year's draft to select running back Rashard Mendenhall.

The 29-year-old University of Miami-Florida product spent his first four NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Steelers in 2006.

Davenport has been injury-prone in his professional career. He missed the final eight games of the 2002 campaign with an eye injury and was shelved for the last 11 contests of 2005 with a broken ankle.

In 67 games, Davenport has rushed for 1,788 yards and 13 touchdowns on 384 carries. He has also caught 50 passes for 484 yards and three touchdowns.
