Sproles Signs Tender Offer With Chargers

Posted: 9:25 pm EDT April 28, 2009

(Sports Network) - Running back Darren Sproles signed a one-year tender offer to remain with the San Diego Chargers.

The deal was worth $6.621 million for Sproles, who had been designated the franchise player for the Chargers. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the spring, but the Chargers used the franchise designation, which guaranteed he would earn the average of the five top running back salaries in the league.

If another team had signed Sproles, the Chargers would have received a pair of first-round draft picks as compensation.

Last season, Sproles rushed 61 times for 330 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 29 passes for 342 yards and five scores. Sproles also topped the team with an 11.3 yard average in punt returns and a 26 yard average in kickoff runbacks, including one touchdown.
