Islanders Extend D Witt

Uniondale, NY -- (Sports Network) - The New York Islanders signed hard-nosed defenseman Brendan Witt to a two-year contract extension worth $6 million through the 2010-11 season, the team announced Tuesday.The Washington Capitals first-round pick (11th overall) of the 1993 draft, Witt had spent the first 10 years of his career in Washington before a trade- deadline deal sent him to the Nashville Predators in 2006. He then signed with the Islanders the next offseason and has complied three goals, 18 assists and 182 penalty minutes in 140 games the past two years. "My family and I are excited to stay on Long Island for the next three years," Witt said. "We love the community and our fans, and I couldn't be happier. I want to thank the Islanders organization and the fans for making Long Island our home." In 783 career games of a 12-year career, the stay-at-home defenseman has recorded 23 goals, 84 assists and 1,285 penalty minutes.
