Oilers Conclude Road Trip In Columbus
(Sports Network) - The Edmonton Oilers will try to close out a five-game road trip on a positive note when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at Nationwide Arena. The Oilers are 1-2-1 on the swing and have dropped three in a row since beginning the trip with a victory in Colorado on November 8. Edmonton was in action Sunday afternoon against Atlanta and lost a 3-2 decision after Slava Kozlov scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period for the Thrashers. Shawn Horcoff returned to the lineup after missing the last four games with a shoulder injury and lit the lamp for the Oilers, who have lost six of seven overall. Dustin Penner also tallied in defeat, while Nikolai Khabibulin finished with 27 saves. Oilers defenseman Sheldon Souray also played in his first game since suffering a concussion on October 8. Souray recorded two shots on goal and logged over 25 minutes of ice time. Edmonton is still without Fernando Pisani (colitis), Ryan Stone (knee), Denis Grebeshkov (knee), Jean-Francois Jacques (back) and Marc Pouliot (sports hernia). Forward Robert Nilsson (head) and defenseman Taylor Chorney (ankle) are questionable for today's game. The Oilers are just 2-7-1 as the visiting club this year and will be happy to return to Edmonton after tonight's contest. The team will begin a five-game homestand in Wednesday's game against the Colorado Avalanche. Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets have won three of their last four games and are coming off Friday's close victory over visiting Anaheim. Kristian Huselius and Rick Nash each scored in regulation and the shootout, helping Columbus notch a 3-2 win over the Ducks. Huselius, who had missed Columbus' last four games with an upper-body injury, also recorded an assist. Antoine Vermette had two assists, as the Blue Jackets rebounded from an embarrassing 9-1 loss to Detroit on Wednesday. Mathieu Garon made 32 saves in the victory to improve his record to 3-1-0 on the year. "Well, I think that's what we needed," Garon said. "As a team we worked hard, we dominated and we wanted to get back on track and that's what we did tonight." Garon will get his second straight start tonight as head coach Ken Hitchcock decided to play the hot hand with last year's Calder Trophy winner Steve Mason going through a sophomore slump. Mason is 7-5-2 with a lofty 3.67 goals- against average and a .879 save percentage. Columbus is closing a four-game homestand tonight and is 5-2-2 as the host this season. Next up for the Blue Jackets is a five-game road trip, which is scheduled to begin Thursday in Dallas. Blue Jackets winger Derek Dorsett is expected to play tonight after leaving Friday's game with a hand injury, but center Samuel Pahlsson is questionable with an elbow injury. Mike Commodore is also questionable for tonight's test. The veteran defenseman had been experiencing fatigue issues and it was thought that he may have an illness, but blood tests came back clean so the problem is believed to be related to his conditioning. The Oilers posted a 6-4 home win over Columbus on October 22 and has won five out of seven in the series. Edmonton has won two of three and four of its last six at Columbus.
