Local Races Main Draw For Primary Elections

Posted: 2:18 pm EDT May 19, 2009Updated: 2:47 pm EDT May 19, 2009

With just one major race at the state level -- a Republican nomination to the state Supreme Court -- local and county races were the main draw Tuesday for Pennsylvania's primary elections.

In Cambria County, six candidates seek two nominations for county judges, and the field includes the county's current district attorney, Pat Kiniry.

Voter interest was a bit less intense in the primary. Cambria County election officials said they expect about 38 to 40 percent voter turnout, which is still higher than the state and national average.

In Blair County, voter turnout was low at St. George's Orthodox Church in Altoona. As of noon, poll workers said they had about 50 voters. One of the big races there to fill is the county sheriff's post, with Larry Field seeking re-election.

Poll workers in Dubois, Clearfield County, said they expected anywhere from 10 to 15 percent turnout. Traffic was light at one precinct on the east side of the city, and there were just a few contested elections across the county, like the Democratic race for Dubois City Council.

In Centre County, there were numerous school board races as well as a hotly contested race for county district attorney and a couple of City Council races.
