STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A day after he was heckled and booed at a health care forum in Lebanon, Pa., Sen. Arlen Specter staged another town hall-style meeting Wednesday in Centre County. The meeting was loud and heated, but did not get out of hand while Specter addressed a series of questions about health care. Many of the estimated 400 attendees clearly opposed health care reform. The biggest cheers came when one person stated, "If you guys can't run a checkbook with the economy, how in the world can you run a health care plan?"Specter was called a liar by one person, but he stressed he was listening to input and if he doesn't like President Barack Obama's final proposal on health care, he won't vote for it.The senator took 30 questions during the 1 1/2 hour session.Police estimated at least 1,500 people who showed up at the forum in Penn State were turned away. People began lining up more than two hours before the event began, but there were no reported problems. Once the doors closed, no signs were allowed in the town hall meeting.Centre County's Republican Party Chairperson said GOP members were urged to attend voice their opinions on health care and their opposition to Specter switching from a Republican to a Democrat. For more information about the health care debate, visit www.healthreform.gov.
